Works by Caroline Carney

I am an oil painter working between Provincetown and Los Angeles. My work often juxtaposes organic elements (flowers, fish, water) with the built environment (fences, trays, architecture). Through my paintings, I aim to communicate feelings of affection for place, presence, and memory. Throughout my life I have made illustrated cards and postcards to send to friends, family, and community, primarily in the form of watercolor scenes from wherever I was at the time. My oil painting practice is an extension of this, paintings serving as open missives, communicating feelings of affection for place, presence, and memory. My paintings are in dialogue with a photography practice that includes a polaroid a day. I paint outdoors as well as in a studio. Behind-the-scenes glimpses, pedestrian views from walks at odd hours, and compositions seen from a bicycle inspire me.
